Title: 2-Link Step Switch Project
Post by: pnwphtec on January 11, 2018, 01:24:29 AM
Just finished latest 2-Link Step Switch System.

Built into a standard 19 by 7 ft. Rack. This is a 20 line 2-link System configured to have 1 or 2 party ringing service allowing for up to 40 lines. The Selectors are of the digit absorbing type which gives the system a 4 digit dialing capability. All the Step Switches are Western Electric. This is a basic system featuring Dial Tone, Busy Tone, & Interrupted 20 Hz (cycle) ringing. It has a small Tube type tone oscillator for tones and a mechanical Interrupter. It also has a single dial 9 access trunk for CO Line Outgoing calls. Another handy feature is an Auto Ring down circuit on the 0 level for connection to an Operator Cord Switchboard or equivalent. There is a 25 pair connector near the bottom of the Rack for all connections. PM if you would like more information.

Are you building these for yourself or to order for someone? Maybe selling them? Im sure there would be a market for these in various sizes though Im sure you invest a lot of time building one.

I know sourcing the parts would be difficult, but id really like a full parts and material list, schematic, wiring diagram, etc on how to build my own.

I do build systems for fun & profit. This one is a museum quality display that needs a good home. Interested parties are encouraged to inquire.

It would be impractical to provide a detailed build plan for such systems.

Each one I build is "one of a kind" due to the fact that each one is assembled & engineered based on the parts available at the time.

With the vast assortment of step switch types that were made for different applications, one has to adapt support circuitry & configurations to match the hardware.

That was my thoughts as well. So little equipment available and so many optional configurations. You would have to dig through what you had available and decide the best way to utilize it based on the amount of space you wanted this project to take up along with the number of hours to invest in it.

My SxS demo is a single 10 switch wide shelf with Finders through to connectors. It will process a 7 digit call. The only thing I wish was different is that it has only 3 or 4 Line & Cut-off Relays. If it had 20 or more I could connect a lot of phones to it like a PBX. I should work on that. Also it would have been better in a vertical rack rather than a long single shelf.

Hmmm, time to dig it out again soon!

Forgot a detail about the pictured system, 2 Tone-to-Pulse converters are included to allow touch-tone dialing.

Beautiful build!
I have the identical rack in my server room sitting empty, this is a perfect use for one.

What would a quality display piece like this be worth?

Thanks.

You likely have TWO more on the go now! In the 90s there was a CO that I frequented that still had just a few bays of abandoned SxS left. I kept thinking I should take some parts but couldnt bring myself to take the cable cutters to the bank cables etc. One day I went in there to see it all gone. They had to add more air conditioning to the CO because of all the ADSL equipment and the SxS was in the way. You snooze, you lose.
