202 & 302 subset - Cannot Break Dial Tone and No Transmission
« on: September 23, 2014, 09:59:23 AM »
I'm using a 302 base as a subset for the 202.  I hooked it up according to diagrams on this forum thread:

http://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=784.0

However, I notice that my yellow and white terminals might be different than that shown in the diagrams.  I hooked it up the same way as I received it.  However, it had the same issues then.  I sent the 4H dial out for service  (Steve Hilsz).

I have a good dial tone, it rings fine and I can hear a caller.

Attached are photos, one of the 202 and the other the 302 base.  Note, I am using the brown/green wire from the handset to the phone as black.  AND I am using the solid brown wire from the phone to the subset as the black wire. These are noted on the photos.

I did test with a second 302 as a subset with the same result.

I have a feeling I have it wired incorrectly.

Thanks in advance!!

It seems to me that you've got the two black M1E jumper cords switched around.

Please verify:
*from hookswitch BK to dial Y
*from hookswitch W to dial BB

Thanks, Unbeldi.  I'll check it as soon as I get home this afternoon.

But I thought I was using this drawing from the other forum thread.

Or am I missing something.

That diagram is correct.
Your picture definitely gives me the impression that you have those two interchanged.
In the diagram one of them is in blue and the other in purple, to provide contrast to black.

I noticed that.  But I think it's the angle of the camera.

I'll check it more closely this afternoon and report back.

EDIT - I just looked at a different photo I have with a slightly different angle.  I believe you're right.  I do have it wired incorrectly.  Anxious to get home to have a closer look.

SUCCESS!

You were right, Unbeldi!  I had the two black jumpers switched incorrectly.

Everything is working perfectly now.

One small thing - - the bell faintly rings with each number that's dialed.  I remember reading someone else had the same thing happening.  I just don't remember if there's a fix.

Thanks!

The ringer has a bias spring. Place it the middle or high bias position.
It is set to low right now in your picture.
