Absolutely any and all members are very welcome and strongly encouraged to take a guess in this contest. After all, there are no wrong guesses, just one lucky one. No one knows the winning bid on any auction until it ends. However, it is important to get your guess in before someone else grabs your guess.

A suggestion was made to run a "Special Auction Contest" on several of the "Old Telephones" phones being sold by way of Morphy Auctions. Each of these special auction contests will really be nothing more than a chance for members to take a one shot guess at the winning bid, if the phone sells, and it's all just for fun.

These auctions will end at various times this weekend, on Saturday and Sunday, so throw you guess into the ring. Since most of us don't have a clue as to what these will sell for, offer your best guesstimate and lets see what happens.  And, since this is a "special rules" no winner contest, the best guesser will not be included in the Hall of Fame or be counted in the Contest Standings as a win. This one is just for fun.

All I ask is that 1) guesses be at least $25 dollars apart, 2) only one guess per player (can't revise a guess) and 3) no guesses will be accepted with less than 1 hour ("yes, one hour") to go in the auction, special rules for a special contest . . .  ;)

. . . this is the phone being auctioned:

Lot # : 803 - 1897 No. 88 - C "San Francisco" Potbelly
(Estimate :     7,000.00 - 9,000.00 USD per the Morphy Auction listing)

More photos and information are available at the above link.

The seller described the phone as a "This is a beautiful 88-C long distance desk telephone made by California Electrical Works in a joint effort between the Western Electric Company and the Pacific Telephone Company, a Bell subsidiary in San Francisco (that's why it is commonly called "San Francisco" potbelly). Unlike most potbellies of its time, the base and shaft are made of a bronze alloy and cast as one piece. This also has a marked, high resistance White Solid Back seven-digit smooth edge transmitter and a marked American Bell outside terminal long pole receiver. Size 12" T. "

The idea that a four-year degree is the only path to worthwhile knowledge is insane.
