SA 8: 1895 No. 3-A Potbelly Special Auction Contest - Ended 12/7
« on: December 04, 2014, 09:29:27 PM »
Absolutely any and all members are very welcome and strongly encouraged to take a guess in this contest. After all, there are no wrong guesses, just one lucky one. No one knows the winning bid on any auction until it ends. However, it is important to get your guess in before someone else grabs your guess.

A suggestion was made to run a "Special Auction Contest" on several of the "Old Telephones" phones being sold by way of Morphy Auctions. Each of these special auction contests will really be nothing more than a chance for members to take a one shot guess at the winning bid, if the phone sells, and it's all just for fun.

These auctions will end at various times this weekend, on Saturday and Sunday, so throw you guess into the ring. Since most of us don't have a clue as to what these will sell for, offer your best guesstimate and lets see what happens.  And, since this is a "special rules" no winner contest, the best guesser will not be included in the Hall of Fame or be counted in the Contest Standings as a win. This one is just for fun.

All I ask is that 1) guesses be at least $25 dollars apart, 2) only one guess per player (can't revise a guess) and 3) no guesses will be accepted with less than 1 hour ("yes, one hour") to go in the auction, special rules for a special contest . . .  ;)

. . . this is the phone being auctioned:

Lot # : 882 - 1895 No. 3-A Potbelly
(Estimate :     12,000.00 - 15,000.00 USD  per the Morphy Auction listing)

More photos and information are available at the above link.

The seller described the phone as a "Extremely rare Western Electric No. 3-A Long Distance Desk Telephone introduced by American Bell Telephone in 1895. Constructed with a piece of spun brass fitted over a heavy iron casting for the base and a spun brass handle. It is equipped with a high resistance White Solid Back seven-digit beveled edge transmitter code No. 229 and a code No. 101 marked American Bell Telephone long pole receiver. Very heavy cast iron base and telescoping shaft allowed the user to fit the transmitter to a comfortable height for conversation. This particular 3-A has a unique stamp on the back of the perch, it says, "NY & NJ T CO". It is mounted on a thin wooden base that looks original to the phone. This is a beautiful, completely original and extremely rare telephone. Size 12" T."

The first phone, Contest S04, sold at auction about 8:40 am CST.

This phone, Contest S08, sold at auction about 9:50 am CST.

S08 was the last phone sold in the series of special Morphy auction contests.

The bidding for these phones began at 8:00 am CST with the phones selling quickly.

Results, "Prices Realized," won't be available until the complete lot of phones is sold and the information becomes available on the Morphy web sit. The contest "winners" will be decided as soon as that information becomes available, and that may take a few days.

Thanks to all who played.

Thanks to Sargeguy for the "Realized Price" of $14,000.00 for this phone.

Seems I also won this Special Contest with the 7th guess of the contest.

Check out the Special Auction Contest standing page to see who else has won in the 8 CRPF Special Auction Contests to date.
