It appears that this one could connect to the telephone exchange (TELE EX). I believe that the ones in the US were used simply as intercoms.

The British ones were only intercoms as well. The switchboard operator would have had a Dictograph station so she could call or be called by Dictograph users separately from the switchboard system.
