This is one of my favorite phones, so I've been following this auction closely.  I have  it on good authority that the original auction was voided because of significant damage on the back side of the telephone that was not disclosed in the auction listing.  The damage is visible in the second to last photo if you magnify it.  There is a big chunk missing out of the bakelite.  Also, the seller insisted on being paid by Western Union wire transfer rather than Paypal.  Apparently the seller was not able to work a deal with the back-up bidder.  It will be interesting to see what happens the second time around.

I just looked at the new auction, and the photos are different from the first auction.  Also, the damage has now been disclosed.  $6K is a lot for this phone with such damage, but he might be able to work a deal with a deep-pocketed collector.

It is the same phone. Comparison of the subset/ringer shows the same markings in the same place and the slotted screw heads are all in the same position and the handset shows the same damage, missing chunk of Bakelite. Just saying for the record.

The damage was shown in the first listing, not pointed out and photographed so as not to point it out, but it was there. New listing has a better photo of that damage.

This phone is on my wish list too. In the top 3. But not for that kind of money. :-)

It is located in eastern Ukraine, quite a volatile area at the moment. The fact that these pictures have the old USSR flag on them, is conspicuous to say the least.

I also wondered how it got there. You would not expect such a phone in that location. War booty from the 40s?

That location, that flag and not being fortright with that damage, does not give me a good feeling.

For that kind of money I would go and pick it up myself. But to fly to the eastern Ukraine......

Both the first and the new listing are from the same location in the Ukraine. The buyer of the first auction, g***s ( 387 ) has a 100% positive feedback rating. In the last 30 days, he has placed 6 total bids on 6 total items and all with less than an hour to go, probably snipes. So, with one bid for each item he wanted, he bought the item. That's 100% on 6 snipes. The buyer gets what he wants.

For both auctions, it's the same seller (same location makes sense) so maybe g***s ( 387 ) returned the item upon seeing the damage when received? That makes sense but can not be verified/proved by me. Just saying . . .

This phone went unsold at it's $6000 asking price.  It was re-listed shortly afterward for $4000, and sold quickly.  There was probably a buyer waiting in the wings.

No doubt is was wanted.

I wonder how that California seller is doing these days after maybe finding out he sold one of these in a side deal for the eBay stated BIN of $200?

Link and eBay capture for  posterity.

What ebay sale are you referring to?  That's the first I've heard of that.  Just curious...

Jon,

This one:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-Siemens-Antique-Vintage-Black-Rotary-Stick-Phone-/371676616777

It was a 5 day auction starting $39 with no reserve. I did an auction contest (now cancelled) for it

http://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=16476.0

and before the first guess was placed, the seller had changed the listing to a BIN at $200 (most likely at the generous request of a back alley buyer) and it was gone. That seller left a lot of money on the table, or the buyers pocket. There was some discussion of this side deal sale in the auction contest topic link above this paragraph.
