Automatic Electric “Auto-Com” Wall Phone -- AE Cat No. AM-74
« on: September 20, 2017, 03:15:44 PM »
Came across this Automatic Electric wall phone and I can't seem to find any information on it. It has a really neat dial on it. From the outside it looks like any regular AE dial, but when you go to turn it its locked up. By pushing the plunger down, it unlocks it and it is able to turn. See pictures.

If anyone can get me a little more info on this piece I would greatly appreciate it.

I have an Antwerp intercom with a normal looking dial, when you hit the fingerstop, it moves slightly and activates a contact, so you actually select a number from 1 to 0, rings by touching the fingerstop, and the selector returns when the handset is put to rest.

May this be working the same way?

I have even got a regular New York number :-) 646 570 1796

The phone is an Automatic Electric Auto-Com.  It is a 10 station intercom.  If you look at the back side of the dial, you will see that it has 10 contacts instead of the normal dial mechanism.  Each contact is for a particular station in the intercom system.  When you turn the dial to a particular station number, the wiper will stop on the contact for that station, and will stay in that position until the call is completed.  When the handset is hung up, the dial will return to the normal position and it is ready for another call.  All stations had a common return.  Auto-Coms were also available in a round base version of a 1A Monophone.  They would have had a really thick mounting cord with many conductors.  There is probably some information available in one of the online libraries such as TCI or ATCA

Linking this topic to a topic that Doug Rose started where he found the desk version (like an AE 1A) of this wall Auto-Com Phone.

What wound up happening with this wall set Matt?
