Western Electric 211 to 684BA dialing problems
« on: December 10, 2017, 01:39:01 PM »
I am in the process of wiring a Western Electric 211 space saver to a 684BA ringer box. I have done this in the past with success but this time not so. When I turn the finger wheel the dial tone breaks (loud pop)but when the finger wheel goes back to stop position the dial tone comes back. The dial contacts seems to move correctly. The 211 has a 5H dial and F1 handset. I am fairly confident the 684BA is wired correctly. The 211 is wired as follows:

Handset:      White to W dial
                   Red to R 211
                   Black to B 211

Dial:            W to white handset
                   Y to BK 211
                   BK to B 211
                   BB to W 211
                   R to R 211

Cord to 684BA:  Red to R 211
                        Green to Y 211
                        Yellow to GN 211
                        Black to B 211

What am I missing? Any advice would be appreciated.

Jf510    ...   I extracted these 2 schematics out of a 1950 Western Tel. catalog, so they're a little "fuzzy", but they're still quite readable.      You didn't mention the connection points inside the type 211 for the mounting cord that runs to the subset.      You've listed the connections at the subset, but not inside the 211.       Schematic for the type 211 & schematic for the type 684-BA attached.

I thought I had the complete schematic, but couldn't find in initially.     But here it is.    Shows the complete set, 211 with the 684 subscriber set connected.

I don't know how in the heck I got in my notes the green and yellow from the 684 reversed on the Y and GN of the 211 but I did. I corrected the problem and it works great. I will copy the diagrams you sent and put in my folder. Thanks for your help.
