Real or fake wooden wall telephone
« on: December 20, 2017, 12:30:29 PM »
I just spotted this in a local paper, but is it real?  Since it has a rotary dial I guess it has been modified.

My guess, either updated phone, or modified by the owner. The dial looks rather old though.
What name does it have on it. How much do they want.

Price $180, I have just seen the 2 pictures. Seller states that the phone was modernized in the 1920'ies.
Looks like the receiver cap is missing.

Was there dial service in the 1920s?

Dial service was available in the 1920s in some locations. That dial was added later. Most telephone companies would not have bothered to convert such sets although it was done- mostly during ww2 when telephone sets were not produced except the military

Many local mom & pop telephone companies modified the old wood phones in the 40's to early 50's. This was often done to save money or because of material shortages due to WWII. That said, this modification does look like either someone else, amateur, added the dial or it is a newer - 60's to 70's modification.   One other point, I Have seen the prices of common wood phone dramitcally fall in the recent years. $180 is way too high.

Someone has put this together with spare parts.  As noted the transmitter arm is not correct.  The hookswitch escutcheon is suspect to me.  The dial has a standoff/housing that was used to modify manual candlestick phones but I have never seen one used in this application plus the location is unique.

Northern Electric did make a single box magneto with a dial, 317AP, but this is not one of them.

Good job, done by somebody who understood wire tieing.
Looks legit, but still too much to ask for it.
