What makes this phone so great?

Is it the brown bakelite? The chrome bands? rarity?

Hope any of you authorities on these can help me.

Thanks!

Basically I would say all of the above. I don't think it's a very common phone.
I think I would pay that for it, if I collected AE a my primary collection.

Back in the mid 80's I saw a Nile Green model like that sell for $2,300 at a show.

I would love to see that model in Nile green.
The older "Deco" phones I have seen in that color are striking. the bakelite is almost translucent.... on my monitor anyway. :/

I lied, It was the dark green and it was in the mid 90's, It was not the lighter Nile Shade. It was at one of the Mile-High TCI shows in Denver. It was a very pretty telephone.
I would say some of those old bakelite colors "glow"

The first display I ever saw, ( at the first show I attended). (ATCA Indy '89) was a large collection of colored AE sets in Oak and Glass showcases.  That blew me away before I ever looked around the room, Then I was Totally blown away.

That Is why everone should attend a phone show.
BTW I saw my first clear 302 and first clear 500 at that show. I bought a KE redbar -handset for $5, and I paid $3 for a handset and cord before I left. Collectors are special nice to First-time attendees.
