TCI Library, are there duplicate BSPs in there?
« on: January 09, 2019, 09:49:32 PM »
was doing some research on the BSP's and noticed a paper about BSP's from a 2012 auction. on the list was both regular and C series listings... so I investigated... couldn't really find what I was after, but it got me wondering... are there duplicates in the library? for instance... C71.xxx covers major station systems and is dated to around 1960. while the 512 series BSP covers that subject as well... are they BOTH in the library? If so, should the C71 entries be marked as "See BSP 512-xxx-xxx"? and notes like that. the reason I'm asking is to make it possibly easier to find a specific BSP. cross referencing it pretty important when looking something up. Or Does the library want to keep alternate copies online to show the changes? in that case, the above mentioned note should be added to alert the user there is more info on that subject. what do you all think?

Who are you planning on hiring to do all the cross reference  research and updating of the library?

They are always looking for volunteers to help with the library if you are interested!

While browsing the Library, remember to read the notes on the home page.

There are (intentionally) some duplicates on the site. With earlier revisions of the software we had to post duplicate copies of some files if we wanted to access them from different categories -- for example BSPs or wiring diagrams. Fortunately, a later version of the software eliminated that requirement, but volunteers have had higher priorities than eliminating all the duplicates. (Better to have too many copies of something than too few.)

The case where BSPs were renumbered from the C-series to Plant series (9-digit numbers), is a bit different. Even though the content wasn't changed, the two files were kept to allow researchers to see the differences (even though minor) in the formatting between the versions.

We also keep duplicates on purpose when scanned file sizes are large. The original scan is kept in case future OCR and size reduction technology can produce better quality smaller files. The smaller files are created for those who want to keep storage space down or who have low speed internet connections.
The Library also went through a growth phase when thousands of BSPs were added in a few months. Most went in with only the BSP number as reference information. Fixing them all by hand would be a huge task for many volunteers (which we don't have anyway). We are currently evaluating some possible automated ways to OCR and index the files automatically -- making them easier to find and better to use. Until that happens, the best search option for BSPs is still the site Google search.

thank you Paul! are there plans to add footnotes where needed?

We have been adding footnotes where needed for years -- as time permits, of course.

The challenge is identifying where footnotes (including changes to titles, keywords, descriptions, etc.) are needed and what they should say.

Quoting from the Library's home page:

Our limited volunteer staff adds keywords largely based on specific user feedback.  Let us know if you are having problems finding something, and we’ll see if we can help locate it in the Library.

Please help make the Library better.

  • Send any suggestions on keywords to be added to specific entries,
  • Contribute scans of documents in your collection and
  • Volunteer time to help add keywords and improve document descriptions.
Due to our labor shortage, the manual addition policy is basically, "the squeaky wheel gets the oil." We add keywords and notes not only when someone sends suggestions, but also when we happen to notice on-line conversations, when we're answering questions or when we are personally researching topics.

We have had several volunteers comb through some of the BSP divisions to prioritize and recommend text changes for titles, keywords and descriptions. We are implementing some of the suggestions in areas that seem to be most popular, such as division 502 on station sets. Since the changes involve manual editing, we're holding off on most to see how many are "fixed" by the automated process tests.

It's a work in progress.
