Relay Automatic Telephone
« on: May 26, 2020, 05:57:20 PM »
This sold on the bay for just over £38 plus shipping. An odd combination but sort of cute. Put together by an individual or a company?

Base and stem look like a cut down GPO candlestick, dial looks AE, cradle/handset (incomplete) looks French.

Any guesses?

This version, with stand, sold for a little more....  :o

Schematic on base shows different handset to that which is on this phone.
Bet the seller is over the moon if this sale completes, price started at £5.

frankenphone    Is the handset the same maker. Is a D1 with an F1 handset a frankenphone? Not a big fan of the term. Good ole Frank was a mixture of all different parts.

Different makers is a more friendly term.

Anyway $787 US is a great deal for seller...Doug

FYI apparently it is a RAT phone.
From that name, it reminds me of  RAT RODS from the 50's.
Rat rod sounds cooler than Franken Rod.

RatCo is the Relay Automatic Telephone Co.

They made an all relay exchange that probably inspired North Electric Co.

Attached are some pictures of this and some earlier phones.

I like the mottled set. I could sneak it in with my swirl sets and the wife would never notice.
