Looks like a hose telephone. Quite common up to 1950's
The wooden parts indicates age, pre ww2.
Functions:
  • Common speech line, and one wire for each ringer. Turn the knob to the right no, press button and the DC ringer in the other end rings.
  • Separate speech line, common with the wire for each ringer. Turn the knob to the right no, press button and the DC ringer in the other end rings.  Remember to turn the knob back to home position, to able to receive calls.

May even be used as a door phone on lots of door phone systems.

When I was living in a apartment building, I used one from the 20'ies in my apartment.
