What did I just buy?
« on: April 01, 2012, 02:20:09 AM »
It was an eBay BIN auction. Couldn't find any reference to this phone. Never saw one like this and it looks like it came out of the factory as shown.

What did I just buy for a lot less than most of my other Princess 701B's.

It's dated 1963. Took a chance. Did I get something special or did I get taken?

Okay, with a little more time to research this phone after buying it, I've found that Gold and Clear Princess phones could be special ordered in the late 60's and 70's.

This phone is dated 1963, which is not the late 60's. Being a 701B, it has no ringer so am waiting for it to arrive.

Anyone have one of these? Anyone know of these? Are they rare? Being relatively new to phone collecting, this phone is a new experience to me.

Terry,

Thanks for the reply and link. I wasn't expecting real gold but it seems shiny (reflects the material it is sitting on like a mirror) and as you know, pack rats love shiny things.  :D

I've found the wiring diagrams already but need the phone in my hands and better photos to see what's up. It was the phone or 9 gallons of gas, 9 gallons of gas or the phone, the phone or 9 gallons of gas.

I parked the car and will wait for my shiny phone. ;)

The housings are definitely heavier than the regular all plastic housings. And they feel much colder like they are made of metal. Not sure how they do it but they are very shiny as well.

I parked the car and will wait for my shiny phone. ;)

Hhmmm, Good for the Environment too!

They have been reported in all Princess models from 701 to 2700-series.

Here are a few from my collection.

Paul,

Thanks for the info and links.

I checked out your site quickly before buying this phone and did not see the gold ones. I did notice this may be one of the last 701B's produced since you noted the switch over to the 702B in 1963. Not having a ringer is not a problem for me with this phone. I'm learning more with everyones help and appreciate that.

And while I was on a buying hold (wife imposed) for some time now, she did like the photos and let me buy it. I guess that's one way to curb phone-itis, get the wife involved.

You're welcome, John.

The info on the Imperial Princess sets is in the color chart, but there are no photos of all the colors.

I added the photo posted above to the Princess page.

It would be appropriate to add an E1 ringer to your set.  If you can't find one locally or at a phone show, one of us can probably turn up a spare.
