Aging (Relic'ing) New Nickel Plated Parts
« on: October 10, 2012, 01:57:41 PM »
Some people do not want a complete shiny new phone but would like to have one or two parts replated.  The parts that are replated stand out on the phone and can take away from the overall appearance.  I have been asked how to age (or relic) shiny nickel plated parts.  One way is to use muriatic acid vapor.  Muriatic acid is available at Lowe's.  Do not put the part directly in the muriatic acid.

This is a link to how it is done by a guitar restorer.

Also if other parts on the phone have acquired different color shades, craft stores sell various patinas that can be applied to blend the colors.

Another technique I use is to dip it into a liver of sulfur solution that my wife uses to patina the jewelry that she makes.  This is especially useful with parts that have engraved or stamped lettering.

Not really, it is a real patina, just artificially accelerated.  A faux patina is paint etc.
