Wife Preservers!
« on: February 20, 2013, 02:40:03 PM »
Island Tel knew who to target back in 1969.

This is a scan of the back cover of an absolutely mint Island Tel 1969 phone book which arrived today for the museum collection.

I must point out that most of the rural areas still had magneto exchanges then - the big push to automatic in rural areas wasn't until the mid 70s. At the time of this book, only Charlottetown, Summerside, and Montgue had automatic exchanges. I have the switchboard from the last exchange which cut over to dial November 30th, 1977 from the Tyne Valley exchange (1240 switchboard shown in last photo)

I currently have the following books: Prince Edward Island Telephone System 1928, Prince Edward Island Telephone System 1929, Island Telephone Co., 1945 Island Telephone Co., 1958, 1963, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1978, and IslandTel 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1990, 1991 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, and Aliant (PEI) 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008., Bell-Aliant 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 books.

Note: March 06, I won another book on eBay to add to the list above, an 1957 Island Telephone Company book. The gaps are gradually closing!

More collectors ought to try to pick up books from their area - it is amazing how much information can be gleaned from within their pages, and they make perfect ephemera to display with their phones.

Below the back cover scan is a scan of the front cover. Shown on its front cover, is the PEI Government House in Charlottetown. Below both book scans, is a photo of the Tyne Valley switchboard, cut over to dial almost 8 years after the issue of this book.

Photos of many of my other PEI books are posted on Gwillim Law's site:

Wednesday evening, I won another early PEI Directory on eBay. It is the 1957 directory, filling out another year in the collection.

Yay!

In another batch of books I bought today were the two following ones I  needed, Island Telephone Company 1962, and 1964. 1964 IS MINT - 1962 is written on but very good otherwise.

ALSO IN THE BATCH:

A number of New England and a Verdun Quebec books, all in the 60s now listed in the   Classified section. In addition to those, I have several spare 1980 PEI books, a spare 1969 book now,  as well as 1964 and 1970 to spare which are excess to my needs and which I would sell.

Dave, great score on the phone books! I am trying to source down same from my ancestral area.

The original topic re-caught my eye ("Wife Preservers!") ;D

I therefore, most humbly, and respectfully, submit to you what I had previously understood to be same; I guess the Island Telco was way out there, well ahead of me! ;)

Best regards, hope it's thawing a bit there for you!

While I was over in the museum doing a few things last night, my wife took a call for me. It was a local gentleman, calling to ask if I wanted some phone books.  While cleaning out his wife's father's house to prepare it for sale, they discovered a box of PEI phone books dating back to the early 60s.

Apparently, it is a full set (or at least he thinks), but until it arrives, I won't know how many of my missing years it will fill in, but I am quite excited about the possibility. Even for books I already have in the collection, there is the possibility, there will be books in better shape than those I currently have in the collection. How I would love to fill in the 7 missing years I have in that era!

Any duplicates I find in the batch will be shared with others.

I finally received these tonight!

It amounted to about 6 boxes full of books, ranging from 1960 to the present. Immediately on top of one of the boxes,. I saw the 1960 and 1961 books I have been looking for for years. I will be very surprised if I don't fill out every issue since 1960s from the lot, as I think I needed only 6 issues.

Once I have them sorted out, I will have spares of many years - and will share them with others for a very reasonable amount (plus postage).

According to him, there are somewhere in the batch one or more early Halifax, NS books

Will keep people posted as I go through them!

Hi Feeling not too bad, though not quite as good as I did mid-week. But I am thrilled about the books - been looking to fill out my collection of books for about 15 years now, and I will be very surprised if I don't find every one I was missing in this lot. And it should give someone else a really good start towards a full set. Just have to get them over to the museum, compare them against the issues I have and keep the cleanest, then make up a listing of the spares.

I love a great find like this!

I have gone quickly through these directories, and thankfully, I found the issues I needed to fill out the years from 1960 until the present in the museum collection with no spaces. It has taken a lot of years to find all of the issues. Too bad I didn't start with these - they would have given me most of them. I am still looking  for most of the 50s (except 57 and 58), and before that have 1945, and 1928 and 1929, so now I have to concentrate on the earlier ones. That being said, it is the most complete collection of directories on PEI., and the only one with the past 53 years intact. Only 6 more needed to bring the collection back to the year of my birth.

I have tons of duplicates which I will be making available with others, including a 1980 Halifax book.

In the lot, I found a  1973 Bedeque Supplemental book, an intermediate issue produced during the "boom" years to list those new subscribers since the previous issued full telephone book.

If someone wants some of the spares, I would recommend pick-up, as phone books are too thick to go first class postal rates and one book would cost $15 or more to ship. Only the very thinnest would go for less.

I am counting on the fact that more people interested in these books would live on the Island, and would be able to pick them up. Books are $10 ea  - proceeds going to the museum.

Of course, I have a number prior to 1960, but they are very scarce. Now I have all the later issues, however, I can concentrate on the earlier ones!

As mentioned last week, I have a number of surplus telephone books surplus after completing my 1960 to present collection in the museum, and after filling in some missing issues for another local archive. I have one year somehow I had missed, 2008. Those still available are the following:

Telephone Co. of Prince Edward Island/IslandTel, Aliant/Bell Aliant

1960-1980 $10.00 ea.
1964 - 1
1965 - 1
1968 - 1
1969 - 1
1970 - 1
1971 - 2
1973 - 2
1974 - 2 1
1975 - 2 1
1977 - 1
1978 - 1

1980 - Present $5.00 ea.
1980 - 5
1983 - 1
1984 - 1
1985 - 1
1986 - 1
1987 - 1
1988 - 1
1989 - 1
1990 - 2
1991 - 2
1993 - 1
1994 - 1
1995 - 1
1996 - 1
1997 - 1
1998 - 3
1999 - 2
2000 - 3
2001 - 1
2002 - 3
2003 - 3
2004 - 2
2005 - 1
2006 - 1
2009 - 1

Off-Island Books:

1 - Halifax/Dartmouth, NS 1980 - $10.00

1 - Lawrence, Salem NH District 1965 - $10.00

1 - Manchester NH 1965 - $10.00

1 - Haverhill, Mass District 1966 - $10.00

1 - Verdun PQ 1968 - $10.00

Shipping on these is expensive (10-15.00 ea), as they exceed the maximum thickness for first class mail. Therefore I recommend pick-up. Proceeds go towards the museum collections.

Bulk purchases can/will be accommodated shipping and price-wise.

Several More books found today.

Through my wife's family, a 1959 book, bringing my unbroken run to 1957 to 2014, a 1968 book which gives me a spare for 68 and when I compare it with the one currently in the collection, I may find it in better shape than my previous one, and a small locally printed Montague book, no year.

I keep finding them here, there, and everywhere!

Hi Paul:

You come up with some of the most interesting little details!

As both ads came from the 60s, it sounds as though the ad subject might have been a "Suggested title" sent out to various companies to use, with them free to use it as they saw fit?

It was a great way to sell extension phones, as the ladies became empowered by our changing society!

Dave
