New crimping tool & other bits...
« on: July 03, 2013, 05:07:27 PM »
Been wanting to buy these for a while now, but haven't had the pennies, but now I did so I have... :D

First thing I got was this for the red AT&Tified NE2500:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271184563225 - 4.56

Cos the prev. owner used superglue to attach the RJ10 plug to the socket, and the only way to separate the two was to break the socket, and then cut the plug off cos it was ruined (and missing it's clip) and then scrape off as much superglue from the transmitter cup as possible and jerry-rig an RJ10 socket in from a cheapo phone...

Problem is that the socket above lacks spades, so, I got some spades of course:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121041831367 - 1.99 for 24x

And that in itself caused a bit of an issue, I don't have the right tool to crimp those, but that's where this forum came into play, using this post by Teleplay:

http://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=4071.msg60610#msg60610

I managed to identify this tool as the right tool for the job, and at a nice price too... ;D

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290870659161 - 4.99 +2.99 P&P

So now I can make up my own proper telephone spade to whatever-plug-on-the-other-end-is cables, aswell as crimping other things better than the cheap, stamped soft steel, bendy tool I have at the moment... :D

And the last thing, which I got this morning, one of them surface-mount RJ11 sockets to connect my red WE500 up modularly (even though it was, it looked messy) to neaten things up... :)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370382962784 - 99p

It's a tiny little thing, looks big in the ebay picture there, but you can see the scale of it against the WE500... :D

Oh, and 24x 12oz cans of Barq's root beer, not phone related, but it's another american thing I love which we don't really get here (well, we do, but it's usually imported and quite expensive!!)... :D

Nothing really special, but, I thought I'd post something that I've bought, cos I've not done much buying of telephone stuff lately... :D

And pictures, cos they're always good to look at... ;D

I wouldn't think that it was bottled in that place, cos it's in cans, and says it was made by a "member of the coca cola association", it's nothing special really, just 24 (well, 21 now) 12oz (355ml) cans of nice fizzy brown non-alcoholic drink (though according to the Daily Mail, all soft drinks contain alcohol to keep you addicted to them!!)... ;D

I would post a direct link to them, but it was part of a half-price sale (so 15 for 24x, still pricey though) on the following website, and they haven't got any Barq's listed any more, probably cos it's so darned popular... :D

And today apparently is a free shipping day cos of it being the 4th of July... :D

Other sites are available of course, I just prefer them cos I know they have good service... :)

Well, the tool and the spades have arrived, and I was rather surprised to find the spades were infact Radioshack stock!!  :D

Anyway, I pulled out a test candidate for trying the tool & spades out, the line cable for my black GPO 706, as someone in the past pulled the spade off the red wire, so I had to carefully wrap the tinsel wire round the screw terminal in my custom BT52A-RJ11 terminal block to get it to work, but about 30 seconds (most of that was working out how to hold the spade in place, press it in far enough and it holds itself in the slot!!) and it was fixed, and worked first time, so I'm happy... ;D

Just need the handset RJ10 to arrive for the red 2500, and I'll be very happy indeed... ;D

Finally got the RJ10 socket today, so crimped on some spades and clipped it into place, the red 2500 is all happy again, well, aside from the fractures in the casing due to the low-grade plastic they used to make the shell... :D

The wires are a tad short in terms of reaching the receiver, but they're just long enough, just have to be careful when removing the receiver... :)
