I use my phone tester to refurbish phones but like to run through my land line as a final test of all functions. Because older pushbuttons don't always have polarity guards for their dials and flipped modular plugs change polarity, I like knowing for sure that I got the polarity correct for testing these phones or for testing if my dial has 'built in' polarity guarding.  Also, the polarity of tip and ring coming into my house has changed on at least one occasion so it is not always right.  I took one of several dual line jacks I came across and switched red and green leads on the back.  and I made another designation strip with the normal and reversed flipped for the next time my wires get flipped on the pole.
