I bought this phone this weekend. It looks like a Kellogg Cathedral, has Kellogg Trasnmmitter, but has 4 bar Nickel Plated C&H Magneto.

Did Kellogg use C&H Magneto's or have it been Franken-Phoned?

Any help would be great.

Thanks,

Jeff

A lot of these early phones were shop-built, or modified by the smaller independent telcos.  They used components from a variety of companies.

Are the magnets engraved with the HC, or are they just covers like these?

I think early Kellogg sets used Holtzer Cabot magnetos

They are stamped HC. They are just like the HC Magneto in my B-R Electric Wall Phone.

Thanks,

Jeff

Check for extra mounting holes on the board the magneto sits on.. If there are some it could indicate the magneto was changed out,

Thanks for the thought. I did and there are no other holes, and the board is original to the case.

Glad to have Cassic Rotart Phone Forum and some really smart folks

I think you hit it in the head, Dave. Tried zooming in but the picture is not very good so I could not be absolutely sure but I think I see the edges on the back.

There are actually two holes on the back mount and one on the front. So it must be a replacement magneto.

I have a Kellogg Ringer Box and it has the correct magneto so I now know what I need.

Thanks,

In the picture below you can see they are not covers...So an original H/C Magneto.

Also included a Before & After of the Wood Case of the Kellogg Cathedral.

Two coats of Minwax Golden Oak & two coats of Minwax Poly Satin. Used 600 wet sandpaper between coats.

I think two more coats will be perfect.

Thoughts?

Looks great. I did mine with just the Honey Oak stain, and two coats of semi gloss clear coat.
Those wooden wall phones clean up exceptionally well.
