What am I looking at and can I find parts ????
« on: January 21, 2021, 06:52:44 PM »
Hey!

I e-mailed about a phone I found on Craigslist ... it was gone ... but the seller had this one that he also wants to sell.

I tried to do a quick search but don't see any exactly like it.

Not sure why but it seems to have a glass viewing port in the top box.

The battery box cover has a crack in the front (top to bottom ... very straight ... maybe a glue joint let go or ????

Mouth piece has a chip ...

Receiver is cracked.

So ... I am guessing I can re-glue the box ?

I will need to find a receiver and mouthpiece ... I think it is a relatively early phone ... can I even find parts?

Any idea what make and year this would be?

How much is it worth ... he is at $150 firm

Thanks .... Mike

Saw your posting on the TCI list about this.

What you are looking at is a Chicago Telephone Co. 2-boxer with a (broken) Stromberg-Carlson receiver. These were equipped with their own "Chicago Telephone" receiver, not the Stromberg that is presently on it.

Did you notice that each of your photos have posted sideways?
Are you able to correct them and repost them in a reply?

One of us could change their orientation and repost for you as a reply, but much nicer to view if photos are posted the correct way up first time.

Hmmm ... I never thought about the pictures being sideways.

I just attached them.

I don't see an option for turning them.

Is there a ways to do this?

Yes, when I first got into phones about two years ago I found dozens of phone forums.  After a while you realize there are only two or three where people engage and where I can usually find answers.

I am still very new to the hobby ... lots to learn.

I have never even seen a phone like this one.

I do have two plain front magneto wall phones ... and a switchboard!

Keeping my eyes open for a few phones to expand my little system.

If photos are sideways the easiest way I do it is to just crop each photo and repost. That works for me and is a quick and simple fix. Cropped images are generally nicer too.

(You will need to post them again as a reply).

Those glass front phones are interesting.
I have seen a couple examples of them in a "set", if you will.
They were part of a wall of I assume, wood phone models from the period.
The glass one seemed to be the only example in each case. I could be wrong.
So, I am guessin, there was only one example, in each case. and it was not the industrial version.
Maybe made to show off the hook switch, or something.
No other reason I can come up with.
Anyway, If you give that phone a fair amount of TLC, you will have a Doll on the wall.
And a buck and a half seams reasonable.
Nice find.
Now, go find the correct rec.
And glue that one nicely, and display it. it needs that.
Those things look like min towers, or something???
Early steampunk, lol.
Nice find.

I just checked out the TLC library ...  they have a Chicago catalog.

Look at page 33 or 34 ... glass window!

One thing .... the magnetos are not chrome?

Maybe this is an earlier model .... or maybe a sales model to show off the insides ... or ?????

I used to have a glass front Montgomery Ward 2-box. They were private label but made by Chicago and sold thru Wards.

I was told the glass front was just to make them more interesting than a standard 2-box phone.
Basically a marketing gimmick.
When I had wood displayed, the glass front always brought a comment. Typically, why did they make it glass front.

I think $150.00 is a reasonable price for it.
