I just stumbled across a picture of the 1935/36 radio receiver "Nordmark Super" made bei Hagenuk in Kiel. The manufacturer is also known for telephones.
What appears to be an ordinary telephone dial is used here to set the frequency of the receiver. Instead of using a variable capacitor, fixed capacitances of different values were combined to achieve the desired frequency in the long- and medium wave band.

Sometimes "odd" dials turn up that apparently won't work in a telephone. Here's an example. They were also used in industrial control panels and many other devices.
