Can a 315H magneto subset be made to function as far as the desk set being functional?  The generator works, but I know it has no real function on today's lines, but I can't hang the phone up unless I disconnect one of the line wires.

Don't really understand the question...
But a 315h was meant to be paired with a candle or a desk set.
Which means, you need a transmitter, receiver, and a hook switch outside of the box to make a complete LB phone.
This is not intended to be a CB phone, although, DSK and others have contributed to rigging this type of coil to function
with a CB installation.
Perhaps more info, and a few pics would help to get you off the ground :)

You didn't understand mine.  I have hooked up a manual D mount to a 315H magneto desk set, but the phone does not work correctly.  It can not hang up.  I was wondering if that is because of a short somewhere in it or if it because a magneto subset can not be used on a non-magneto line.

I was not sure what was being asked either but I think I have it now.

It will work perfectly well with another local battery telephone as an intercom. You could make a party line intercom system by connecting several telephones together and using code ringing. That, I think, is the best use for these phones.

If you connect it to a land line you will have some difficulty. It probably has no capacitor in series with the bell and the bell is low impedance so even when you hang up the receiver/handset, current will flow through the bell preventing the phone from "hanging up".

You will also need a battery so that the transmitter works.

I am not a fan of modifying these to work on a modern CB telephone line but it can be done.

The D mount DOES work when hooked up to a 684 subset though.

Ok, so that's the reason.  Thanks for your help.

I have 4 magneto phones connected together to make one little party line. Two are magneto subsets with candlesticks and two are wooden magneto wall phones. They work great and are a lot of fun to play with. Even my kids like them.

To Jack Ryan:

Today in my spare time, I tried what you said - put a condenser in line with the ringer and it works perfectly now, except that I have have to have the generator wired to L1 and Ground rather than L2, (we have grounded ringing).  Thanks again!

I'm glad you had a win!
