I got a "new" butt set off eBay.  It was $20.50 + $10.90 shipping.  Has anybody ever seen one like this?

Seems to be missing its "subset."

Google "home telephone company of michigan" including the quotes on each end and you will get quite a few hits to this early 1900's device.

A most interesting but set.

Good find!

I disagree....it is a butt set. I have one by Home and one by Dean.  The Dean hangs on a Wood case.

They are very cool the way the transmitter cover protects it. You can see the press to talk button on the Home in the last picture

My Home has long cords but the clips are long gone.....Doug

Not a butt set, in my opionion. Has a 1/4" plug to fit into a jack, most likely on the box. Butt sets have clip on connectors. I thought it was a cord board but set but doing that Google search led me to believe it was, with the wood box, a bed side type telephone set.

Still a good find, but needs the "subset"

Thanks for the clarification, John. The "subset" would indeed complete the find.

Is that a flip open transmitter? I'm not familiar with the history of butt sets but at some point engineers had to realize they needed and developed that tool. It has that look, they used for decades. This looks as if they could have had a butt set in mind, if not already in hand, when this came along.

Either way, even better find than first thought!

I think everybody gets partial credit. This is what I got on Facebook.

One more picture with what I assume is the original case.

So its like an early 'plug and use' mobile phone for the Bell employee?

Did he add a screenshot of the booklet, I'd like to see it. Which Facebook page is that please, I'll take a look.

Interesting find. Thanks for sharing.

Definitely.  :)

I'm wondering if this unit was by carried by a 'T' ranking equivalent (Inspector). He would have been sent out to various locations checking up on the progress of work done externally. This unit would have enabled him to plug in and report back.

He hasn't sent it yet.  As soon as he does, I'll add it to the post.
