These phones was made by several companies, mine is made by Monmouth Electric Co

I hve to admit that I did not hear the cound from these sound powered phones werry well in an ordinary field telephone, so I tried an extremely simple mod, and it works well :)

I suppose the sound powered microphone (probably a higher impedance dynamic microphone) does not match the impedance of regular LB phones very well, resulting in low volume.
Does the TA-1 have a "howl call" generator to call the remote party? I have a pair of mine phones like that but never tried one of them with a "regular" phone.

You are probably right about the impedance matching, but the generator makes a low frequency AC.  Not enough power to energize all kind of ringers, but it rings e.g. The German FF33 from WWii, The US EE-8 but not all ow the TA-43 or TA-312. :)

These work better with each other.(two connected together)  Pressing the handle makes loud clacks in the other phone as a signal.
I think these are for end to end communication only.
