Keep this in mind, it's not easy to help a person that is not tech savvy and doesn't have basic equipment to troubleshoot a phone problem.

Seems like a shorted ringer or an ATA ring voltage problem.

It was working for 5 years but recently quit working.

Difficult to discern the problem (or something else) without having tech knowledge and tools.

That's why I suggested trying another land line, if it would ring, it's the ATA, if it didn't ring, it's the ringer.

Another thing that could be tried is to buy a similar and working phone to see how it works on the existing ATA, an action similar to trying the "bad" phone on someone else's land line.

If the "new" phone rings, it's the ringer that's bad on the original phone. If the "new" phone does not ring, it's the ring generator in the ATA.

Someone have another way to do a no tech analysis?

My best low tech advice is to feel the ringer armature while it is supposed to be moving to determine if there is anything happening.
