Pay phone newbie questions...

Hi Guys, I'm thinking of upping my game to a pay phone. LOL! Up until now, it's just regular telephone collecting, and using them as intercom in a PBX, so I don't know a lot about payphones.

1. How does a payphone behave, if it's new old stock? Or, simply taken from the street? I'm talking about the common ones you see in the 80's and 90's. That hasn't been touched or modified by a restorer? Does it work at all? Or, do they need to go through the hands of a restorer to do some magic, in order for it to be compatible for home-use landline?

2. The coin feature... If operators are no longer in business, but the phone is new old stock, how does it behave? What if the payphone will simply connect to an extension on a PBX to be used as intercom? Do you need telephone service to see the coin feature in action?

I'm sure I'm going to have many more questions. Thank you for your time.

It has been used lots of systems, so you can not get an easy answer.  If you are lucky the coin collect is only a dc signal that you may make with simple circuits.  We need to know much more about your phone.
Here is one solution I made: https://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=11987.msg127999#msg127999
