If you restore Western Electric 3 slots you might find this interesting. It is a kit of parts that can be installed in less than 5 minutes that makes your Western 3-slot a self contained single line phone. It takes the place of the 685 subset.https://www.ebay.com/itm/306703762164

The original subset looks to be slightly more complex:  https://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=26954.msg260299#msg260299

At least the one on the linked thread containes a ringer, the voice circuit induction coil with 3 wires for the voice circuit, one for the coin relay, and 2 for the line. (=6 wires)

On the other hand, the ad has pretty good pictures, and explains detailed how to put it in. It even containes a piezo - ringer.
My first look did not go well, but after reading the details, it is worth considering if you need a simple solution, and dont want a subset under your payphone.

If one of you try it, please share your experience.
