I'm currently in the 'you don't know what you don't know' camp. I picked up this phone as an 'interesting item' from an antique shop.  I've been able to find the 50AL stamp, but uncertain as to rest of components. Real/ Frankenphone? worth restoring?  happy to search and read, but some basic directions appreciated.

To disassemble, remove the 3 screws on the base plate.

You will also need a bell box (subset), which contains an induction coil, condenser (capacitor), and ringer.

The phone has been updated --  probably in the 1940s -- with a Western Electric 706A receiver and a WE 635A "bulldog" receiver.

Yes, it's all real.  Does it have a 4 wire base cord?  With the 706A receiver, the bulldog transmitter, and the No. 4 dial, i wonder if it was converted to anti-sidetone (151AL).  You would then want an anti-sidetone subset. It would make a good user phone, as it will give similar transmission quality to later models.

Thank You for the info. The cord to the (missing) ringer box is 3 conductor. Does that suggest a specific ringer model ?

Three wires would mean that it is still a 50AL, and would be used with a 534 or 584 sidetone subsets.  The 634 and 684 subsets are designed for use with anti-sidetone sets, which have 4 wires in the base cord.  It is possible to wire an anti-sidetone subset for sidetone use, if necessary.

It's unusual to see the newer type transmitter and receiver on a phone that wasn't converted to a 151AL (anti-sidetone).

Thank you for the reference numbers, now off to use the 'Search' function.  :)
