Good evening to all.

I purchased a WE Princess 2702 BM. Everything works on the unit except the dial pad does not light up.
I can dial out and receive calls. also, bell rings just fine.
1) Do all Princess models light up?
2) where is the bulb located?..Maybe it's a bulb issue.

Photo of Dial pad attached.

Thank you in advance. I hope you can help :)

The lamp on a Princess phone is on the bottom.  Some of the very late production do not have lighting.  Your keys look to be opaque white, which is probably unlighted.

The following images are from 1975 and show the dial lamp and 35-type dial installed in a 2702BM PRINCESS™ set.

However, your set has a 72-type dial (1983) which, around Divestiture, were beginning to replace earlier type dials.

I'm not certain of the timeline but after Divestiture these sets were no longer manufactured for use with dial lights and your dial doesn't appear to have translucent keys to allow light to filter through them.

Perhaps someone else that is more familiar with this period can enlighten us further.

Also, a photo of the bottom of your set may provide us with additional insight.

I forgot to add that the 72J3A dial schematic and specs do not show a provision for being illuminated.

Also, a dial light transformer would be needed for non-LED illuminated dials.

Here's a photo of the bottom of a CS2702 without the opening for the light bulb.

Agreed. This does not look like a lighted dial.  The lighted dials have dull, translucent buttons.  For comparison, I have attached a few pictures of my Princess, which does light up.

I bought this at a Southern Bell Phone Center in 1983.  It was a refurbished unit, with earlier parts, but new plastics.  Notice the date on my lighted dial is 1981, while the date on OP's dial is 1983. Also notice the cylinder near the * button.  This protects the bulb, but allows light to shine upward into the keypad.

Thanks to you all for the help. I always sign out with a "lesson learned".
Although it does appear that this unit is not capable of illumination, i've enclosed a couple of photos as requested.
I'm bummed-out. but I still like the phone.

Thanks again

Yes, the pictures tell the story.  Yours has solid metal across the area where the bulb access would be on a lighted model.

Don't get discouraged, though.  These come up on eBay fairly often.  Now that you know what to look for, you should be able to find a lighted model without too much trouble.

Yeah, a lot of the CS (consumers sales) sets were made without the dial light. The boxes for those sets don't advertise the dial light as I think they didn't want to deal with bundling the transformer and customers not hooking it up properly since they now did it themselves instead of an installer. That said you can sometimes get lucky and find a light enabled CS set

I'm less certain on if/when they started using the non light dials and keypads in the sets made or refurbished for lease. The signature series introduced in 93 did have an LED dial light that a transformer could light as a night light, but I don't know if at some point they stopped doing it for refurbished classic sets. I know on the Trimline the round button sets and non LED rotary sets started getting reissued as non-lighting models for lease
