I'd take an educated guess but am unqualified.
In paramediclass, doctor asked me signs of Alzheimers.  "I forget.", I answered.

Lighted Princess® telephones are our favorites!

To ensure an emergent transport call, I need only:
- take first sip of beer when eating pizza
- start shampooing in the shower
- pull bed covers over and get warm and cozy
- begin my OCD oil change.  (Remove oil plug to drain overnight.)

Was it not possible to merely dial the number?
Rotary-dial telephones are seen.

The Royal Family did not dial their own calls.

Even when the switchboard was replaced with a modern electronic system (in the late 1980s) it had to be modified to allow for the significantly above-average number of manual extensions required.

I read that in Hyacinth Bucket's (it's pronounced, "boo-KAY")
voice.
