Hello All - New member here. Also new to phone collecting, but not electrical / electronics or the rotary dials and bell ringers I grew up with. I've gotten a hold of a collection of half a dozen desk phones from probably the 40s to the 70s/80s.

One of them is missing a screw-on transmitter and bakelite "cap" (not sure what it's called) on the receiver.

Just curious is this is something that is available out there, and what part or part numbers may be interchangeable with it.

I see transmitters on eBay, and a few caps - not sure how to tell which ones would be compatible.

I live in Western PA, but I'm not able to go to the upcoming telephone collectors international show in Hicksville, NY on April 12.

Also wondering if someone that's going might be able to find one to sell and ship to me, etc. or if these parts are difficult and/or expensive to obtain these days.

Appreciate any leads, tips, guidance this group might have. Also let me know if there is a better picture or more info needed to answer. Thx!--DCA

It looks like an AE 40 to me.  The attached photo shows what the transmitter unit and cap would look like.

Yes, you've nailed it! @SUnset2

I looked up the model/type 40 and that's definitely it. Seems like they made it for a number of years - with and without chrome banding. It seems it may not be worth it for me to replace the parts, as they seem scarce and unless at a swap meet, places like eBay I'd be paying about as much for the parts as for the whole phone.

Maybe I'll just 3D print a new cap and call it a day (leaving the transmitter out and a it can be a shelf queen). Will have to spend some time over in that area of the forum.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/125808196046 - looks like what you need.

That seller has a few of these handsets but this one has the best looking transmitter element. That doesn't mean it's a working one of course but those AE elements are generally pretty good in my experience.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I have a few of the AE transmitters you need, I am not sure if I have a handset or any caps. I will look over the weekend and let you know on Monday.

The newer AE transmitters are backwards compatible. Note that the one in sunset2's reply photo is marked "81" rather than "41", meaning that it is from the time of the AE 80, 90, 182 Starlite, and Styleline.

I have a transmitter but no dice on a handset or cap. It's yours if you want it.

Sure - here it is, and a closer picture of the transmitter end (although it could have been clearer).

I think this _might_ be it:
