AE 44 low volume in rec when online

Got a 44 and when connected to any suitable power source, has great sidetone.
This makes me think...xmitter and receiver are good???
Anything spoken into 44's xmitter, can be heard by a phone on the other end very well.
Anything sent from the other end, is attenuated and hard to hear in the 44. Although, the 44 still as good sidetone.
I see this problem a lot.
Is this a common thing when coupling unlike phones together, as I would maybe suspect???
Or is there a common fix for this problem???
I would really like to get over and past this hump, So my phones all play nicely together!

I have a known good handset & cord that I put alligator clips on. Whenever I have a problem with transmit or receive I hook that up to eliminate cord or element issues. I would start there.
