Hello all, first post.

I bought a WE bell box for my sons WE202. Didn't ring with the internal .1 mfd cap. I connected a 47mfd from an old 500 network and with also backing off the tension adjustment was able to get a decent bell. Bought an audio quality 47mfd cap but didn't know the size. I was able to mount and close the box. My question is why was the original cap only .1mfd? Did it run on higher ac voltage. My line is 68vac ringing

Should be 1 MF for the ringing condensor, 2 MF for the speech condensor.

I don't know what component values a 500 uses exactly, but there is more than one capacitor in it.
Generally speaking, the ringer capacitor is a 0.5 ... 1 µF type rated for at least 250 Volts.
0.1 µF is too small and won't work for a ringer, but may be used for other purposes in a phone.
47 µF is way too large.

...oops Mike was faster :-)

I watched a YouTube video about testing bells and the guy said a&k terminals on the network was 47mf. Wouldn't using a larger cap just be over kill because it's just going to charge/discharge low current ac anyway? Thanks for the responses.

TelePlay

Lot of "."'s missing.

0.47 uF for a WE with a C4A ringer.

Other phones and other ringers may use other ring capacitor values.
