Just out of curiosity, does anybody know anything about these "Rail Call" New York phones?

Were they based on regular payphone boards with a cellular back end or something?

As previously posted, the topic is covered in part in the October 2020 Singing Wires article "Radio Telephones in U.S. Trains." Service was started in the late 1940s and has been improved over the years.

I don't know much about payphones but I know a membership to TCI is money well spent.
