Backing board necessary to mount payphone?

Now that I've got my payphone restored and operational, I need to hang it somewhere.

Is it necessary to buy or fabricate the wood backing board that I've seen mentioned, or can I just screw it to the wall provided I've got a sturdy enough wall?
My name is Kenn, and I like telephones.

I just used #8 or #10 wood screws in the bevelled holes. Made sure they screwed into a stud.
I think the backboard was used if a subset was installed. Easier to mount only 1 thing with 2 devices already on it.
