Hi, i'm new & this is my 1st post. it seems like a very friendly & helpful place. I have been collecting phones, mostly western electric, for about 20 years. i haven't done anything with them until now. I retired from being an auto mechanic last week 4/7/15 & plan on having some time to spend with my phones. My 1st question is about my Protel payphone. I have read the threads on Protel & it seems like all I have to do is is hook up a modular line cord to L1 & L2 & ground the ground terminal & everything should work. Being 67 years old I knowing life is never that simple. Should I charge the batteries somehow 1st, or will it work on the line voltage, until the batteries charge. from what I read the batteries only charge off hook. I have included some picture of the phone & related numbers. the last picture is of a connector that wasn't connected to anything, should it be? Should I try hooking it up & see what happens???

The chassis is missing the cover. I believe the black gray cable may be for the battery. Yellow black cable should feed relay which I do not see.

the cover is missing because I took the phone apart to get better pictures. the little battery pack is mounted in the cover, are the gray/black wires for another battery??

Hi Gary and welcome to the forum from another old grease monkey. I have not retired yet but did stop working on cars some years back to become a service advisor. You have found the best forum on the net! Great people with tons of knowledge. I am not familiar with the Protel phones but some here are. You will get all the answers you need.

Nice to hear from you Harry. it's much cleaner working on phones & you can do it inside an air conditioned house ;-)

Battery plugs into the black socket on the bottom left side not too far from the RJ-11 phone line connector.. The black and grey plug is for a coin box switch. Do not plug a battery into that connector.
