Oops,
I  bought a very cool telephone lamp cheap lamp:

I guess this is the discussion thread for a FOTM topic.
A  heartfelt thank-you To Teleplay for bringing this to my attention.
Never-mind the fact that I an trying not to chase telephones.

However, as Doug R. likes to point out, Every phone room needs a lamp.
I guess my newest phone room  lamp is an oilcan.
The sideways photo is from the auction.
A SC oil can runs about $1500 + apparently less for a lamp

I did a low ball snipe at $413.00
Winning it at that amount would be a 'Happy Dance" by me.

This win was cheap,  Cheap enough to keep for a few years,
To me , this type of deal comes around only occasionally. I need to enjoy  my new lamp for awhile\. Give me at least 6 months of display I get rid of it.

Interested collectors are welcome to present standing offers. conveniently valued at $1,000+

I looked at the photos some more.
I am already liking it more. I think I will be using it as a lamp for quite awhile.

I think it will look pretty good  with a mouthpiece and a 'Buerger bros.' base ring.
I just need to find my base ring.

Received it today, I like it a lot.
However, It was poorly packed and arrived in a torn box. the internal threads on the receiver were broken.
so the guts don't want to stay in.
On eBay There is a complete receiver with cap starting around $70 delivered.
There is a  nice repro cap for about $40.00 delivered.
I asked for a $37.50 refund to cover the replacement cost of the bakelite sleeve.
I have a cracked sleeve that was sitting around that will work for a temporary replacement, and I think I have a complete receiver  in storage.

I will try the rubber ring when I find it, but it is too nice for the current patina of the phone.
The phone shows well without it.
It appears all the guts are in the transmitter. The base plate and mounting bracket are missing (I knew that when I bought it.
I can get a repro replacement base with felt for around $40.00 plus shipping, but the felt looks too new for this set, I also need the mounting bracket.

The current plan is to get the receiver looking right and add am original Mouthpiece from another phone. I have a repro mouthpieces for the donor phone. I may have a spare original mouthpiece.
I like the look of the patina and I am in no hurry to polish it.

It looks possible to remove the 'hickey' ( threaded lamp tube),
If so the only alteration to the phone was threading the perch for the 'hickey'.

I think this one will stay with me for a couple of years. When I am ready to get rid of it, I will probably  use it as trade goods at a telephone  show.

I will post some photos later, after I hear back from the seller.

I did get the refund of $37.50. And I found a cracked sleeve sitting in the phone room.
I also found another receiver that has a repro sleeve and is missing the cap.

The cracked sleeve matches the phone the best.

I should have at least 1 more complete receiver and another that is on  a phone, I need to dig them out and decide which looks best.

It looks like I may be able to spin the hickey out of the phone with a cordless drill, I am not in a hurry to try.

Can't wait to see the pics Jim. I have one of these as well I bought cheap in a antique shop. Mine has 3 holes in the " can" where someone mounted a dial, I removed. I keep a close look to try to find a replacement part. I watched this one from day one. Well bought, phone is in good hands.

I thought it looks if the phone wasn't physically damaged in the lamp conversion. Was it?

The lamp tube goes down into the the top where the transmitter wires would feed thru. Probably some minor damage, but not much.
It is also missing the baseplate and 3 legged 'spider' bracket that would hold the baseplate on.
I borrowed a handset cap from another receiver.  I like the current patina and I am trying to match the look of it.

I found a repro base with new felt on eBay, but I don't have the spider and the felt on the repro looks to new unless I was going to plate the phone.

I will try to post photos later tonight.

No photos yet.
Life keeps getting in the way of phone collecting.

The transmitter is mounted upside down and is grooved out a bit for transmitter adjustment with the tube.
There is a reasonable chance that this would be hidden if the tube was removed and the transmitter was install properly.

~

When you say it was a base, I'm assuming it didn't have the exterior "oil can" part its self?

As you can see, someone once "improved" mine by adding a dial.

I meant the baseplate and bracket that holds it to the phone..
I am missing those parts. It shows well without them.

Mine is early,  I think it should have  the short "brass bottom" receiver.
I haven't done any research yet.

I like your set.
